About this tool

Each word's first letter is taken in order to build the acronym. "Skip small words" leaves out a short list of common articles, conjunctions, and prepositions (a, an, the, of, in, on, at, for, and, or, but, to, with) the way many real-world acronyms do — "As Soon As Possible" becomes ASAP either way here since none of its words are in that list, but a phrase like "State of the Union" would become SU instead of SOTU with it on.

Questions about acronyms

How is an acronym made?

From the first letter of each word in a phrase: “As Soon As Possible” becomes ASAP.

Should small words like “of” and “the” be included?

It depends. Many acronyms skip them, so “State of the Union” could be SU, but some keep them (SOTU). Tick Skip small words to leave them out.

What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?

An acronym is said as a word (NASA, scuba); an initialism is said letter by letter (BBC, FBI). Both are made the same way.

Can I make several acronyms at once?

Yes. Put each phrase on its own line and you get one acronym per line.
