About this tool
Each tap records a timestamp, and the BPM shown is 60,000 ÷ average interval in milliseconds across your last 8 taps — a rolling average so a single mistimed tap doesn't throw off the whole reading. Taps more than 2 seconds apart are treated as the start of a new sequence rather than averaged in, since that long a gap almost always means you paused rather than meant an extremely slow tempo.
Nothing tapped here is sent to a server — the entire tool runs as JavaScript in your browser tab.
Questions about BPM
How is the BPM worked out?
From the average time between your last 8 taps, so one mistimed tap doesn’t throw it off.
What if I pause while tapping?
A gap of more than 2 seconds starts a new count, so you can stop and try again.
What BPM are most songs?
Pop songs are often 100–130 BPM, house music about 120–130, hip-hop 80–100 and drum and bass about 170.
Why is my reading double or half what I expected?
You may be tapping every half-beat or every other beat. Both are valid; pick whichever matches how the music is counted.
