About this tool
Decoding uses zxing-cpp, the most widely used open-source barcode engine, compiled to WebAssembly and run in a background worker in your browser — the image or camera feed is never sent anywhere. Besides QR codes it reads Micro QR, rMQR, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417 codes (boarding passes, parcel labels, driving licences) and the common 1D barcodes: EAN-13 and EAN-8, UPC-A and UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar and GS1 DataBar.
A still image gets a thorough search: rotated, inverted (light-on-dark) and downscaled versions are all tried, and every code in the picture is found and outlined, so a photo of a whole label works. Wi-Fi codes are shown as network name and password. Live camera scanning needs a secure connection and camera permission; it stops as soon as a code is read.
Nothing you scan is stored or transmitted; if the decoded content is a link, it's shown as plain text — always check a URL before opening it, the same as you would with any QR code from an unknown source.
Questions about scanning QR codes
How do I scan a QR code on my screen?
Take a screenshot and drop it here. The code is read straight from the image, with no second phone needed.
Can it read barcodes too?
Yes: EAN and UPC product barcodes, Code 128, Code 39, Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417 (boarding passes and driving licences) and more.
Can it show a Wi-Fi password from a QR code?
Yes. Wi-Fi codes are shown as the network name and password.
Is it safe to scan unknown QR codes?
Links are shown as text and never opened automatically, so check the address before you visit it. Nothing you scan is stored or sent.
