How to simplify a fraction

How this works
Both numerator and denominator are divided by their greatest common divisor (GCD) to reach the smallest equivalent whole-number fraction.
Example: 18/24 shares a GCD of 6, simplifying to 3/4.

How do you simplify a fraction?
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor, the biggest number that goes into both. For 18/24 that is 6, which gives 3/4.
How do I know a fraction is fully simplified?
When the only whole number that divides both the top and the bottom is 1. 3/4 is fully simplified; 6/8 isn’t, because both divide by 2.
Can I simplify an improper fraction like 12/8?
Yes. 12/8 simplifies to 3/2, which is the same as 1½.
Does simplifying change the value of the fraction?
No. 18/24 and 3/4 are exactly the same amount: 0.75, or 75%.
