Microphone Test
Speak and watch the level meter move, pick which microphone to use, and record a short clip to hear exactly how you sound to others. Audio never leaves your device.

How to test your microphone
- Click Start microphone and allow microphone access.
- Speak and watch the level meter; pick another microphone if it doesn’t move.
- Click Record 10 seconds and play it back to hear yourself.
About the test
If the meter moves when you talk, your microphone works in this browser, and so in browser-based calls. Speaking normally from about an arm's length should push the meter well into the green; if it barely moves, the input volume is too low or the wrong microphone is selected, and if it hits red the sound will distort. Record a clip and play it back to hear what others hear: echo, hum, background noise or muffled sound show up straight away.
"Noise suppression and auto volume" turns on the processing browsers use for calls (noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain); untick it to hear the raw microphone. If nothing happens: allow microphone access from the icon in your address bar, check that a headset is plugged in and not muted, close other apps using the microphone, and on a Mac check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Device names only appear after you've allowed access once. Audio is processed only on your device and the recording is never uploaded.
Questions about microphones
Why isn’t my microphone working?
Allow microphone access in the address bar, check the right microphone is chosen, and make sure it isn’t muted by a switch or in your computer’s sound settings.
How loud should the meter go?
Speaking normally at arm’s length should reach well into the green. Hitting red means distortion; barely moving means the input is too quiet.
How do I hear what I sound like on calls?
Leave noise suppression and auto volume ticked, record a clip and play it back. Untick it to hear the raw microphone.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. It stays in your browser and is gone when you leave the page.
