The formula
The starting tip follows local custom for your currency: 18% for US and Canadian dollars, where 15–20% is expected, and 12.5% elsewhere, the usual UK service charge. Check your bill first, as UK restaurants often add a service charge already. tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100), and total = bill + tip. Splitting divides both the tip and the total evenly by the number of people — it doesn't account for anyone ordering more or less than the group average.

Questions about tipping
How much should I tip?
In the UK, 10–12.5% is usual in restaurants, and often already added as a service charge, so check the bill. In the US and Canada, 15–20% is expected for table service.
How do I calculate a 15% tip?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then add half of it. On a $60 bill: $6 + $3 = $9.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
In the US, tipping on the pre-tax amount is common, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever you prefer.
What if people ordered different amounts?
