How to play Lights Out

  1. Choose a grid size: 3×3, 5×5 or 7×7.
  2. Click a light to switch it and its four neighbours on or off.
  3. Turn every light off to win. Turn on Hint to see the next light to press.

About this game

Every puzzle here is generated by starting from a fully solved (all-off) board and applying a random sequence of the same toggle move used to play — since toggling a light and its neighbours is its own exact opposite, and the order you toggle in never changes the result, any board reached this way is guaranteed solvable no matter how it looks. That's also how the hint works: this page remembers exactly which cells it toggled to scramble the board, so it always knows a valid next press toward that same solution — turn on Hint to have the next necessary light outlined for you.

Pick 3×3 for a quick warm-up, 5×5 for the classic version, or 7×7 for a real challenge. Your move count is tracked per puzzle, and your best (lowest) move count for each grid size is saved on this device.

Questions about Lights Out

Is every puzzle solvable?

Yes. Each puzzle is made by scrambling a solved board with real moves, so it can always be solved.

Does the order of presses matter?

No. Only which lights you press matters, and pressing the same light twice cancels out.

What is a good strategy?

Chase the lights down: work row by row, pressing the light below each lit one, until only the bottom row is left. Then use Hint or work out the right top-row presses.

Can I get a hint?

Yes. Turn on Hint and the next light to press is outlined.
