About this tool

Choose where the numbers go (top or bottom; left, centre or right, or on the outside edge like a book), the style (1, Page 1, 1 of 12, Page 1 of 12 or – 1 –), the size and how far from the edge. To leave a cover or contents pages unnumbered, start on a later page; to carry on from another document, change the first number.

Each number is written onto its page with pdf-lib in a standard font, so it stays sharp and selectable, and everything else in the PDF is kept exactly as it was. Pages turned sideways get their number upright, in the right place as you see the page.

The PDF is opened in your browser and never uploaded.

Questions about PDF page numbers

How do I skip the cover page?

Set “Start on page” to 2. The cover gets no number, and the next page is numbered 1 (or whatever you set as the first number).

Can I number pages “Page 1 of 12”?

Yes. Choose that style. The total counts only the numbered pages, so it’s right even when you skip a cover.

Will it cover any of my text?

Check the preview: numbers go in the margin, 10 mm from the edge by default. Move them further in or out, or to the top, if they’d touch anything.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It’s numbered in your browser, on your device, and never sent anywhere.
