How to count words and characters
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Read the words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and reading time, which update as you type.
How this counts
Words are counted as whitespace-separated tokens. Sentences are estimated by counting terminal punctuation (., !, ?), so abbreviations may occasionally inflate the count slightly. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading.

Questions about word counts
How are words counted?
Anything separated by spaces or line breaks counts as a word, the same way most word processors count. A hyphenated word like “well-known” counts as one.
Does the character count include spaces?
Both are shown: Characters includes spaces, and No spaces leaves them out. Check which one your essay, form or ad limit means.
How long does it take to read my text?
The reading time assumes 200 words a minute, an average for adults reading silently. A 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes.
How many words is a page?
Roughly 500 words single-spaced or 250 double-spaced, in 12-point type on A4 or Letter, though fonts and margins change it.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. It’s counted in your browser as you type and never sent anywhere.
