About this tool
All three scores are computed from the same three counts — words, sentences, and syllables per word — using their standard published formulas. Flesch Reading Ease runs roughly 0–100, where higher means easier to read; Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and the Gunning Fog Index both estimate the US school grade a reader would need to follow the text comfortably. Syllable counts use the same vowel-group estimate as our Syllable Counter — a heuristic, not a dictionary lookup, so scores are a close approximation rather than an exact figure.

Questions about readability scores
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read easily. Higher is easier; below 30 is very difficult, like academic papers.
What does the Flesch-Kincaid grade mean?
The US school grade needed to follow the text. Grade 8, about age 13 to 14, suits most general writing.
How do I make my writing easier to read?
Use shorter sentences and everyday words with fewer syllables. Splitting one long sentence into two usually helps most.
Why do I need a paragraph or more?
The scores are averages of sentence and word length, so a few words don’t give a reliable result.
