How to calculate a weighted grade
- Click + Add category for each part of the grade, such as homework or the final, with its weight and your score.
- Leave a category’s score blank if it isn’t marked yet.
- Enter a target to see what you need on the rest.
How it's calculated
Your current grade is the weighted average of every category that has a score entered: Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight of scored categories). If any category is left blank (not yet graded) and its weight is known, the "needed" figure solves for the average score across those remaining categories that would hit your target final grade, given everything already scored. Weights should add up to 100% for the target calculation to be meaningful.
Questions about weighted grades
How do weighted grades work?
Each score counts according to its weight. With homework at 30% (scored 90) and an exam at 70% (scored 70), the grade is 0.3 × 90 + 0.7 × 70 = 76.
What do I need on my final to get a certain grade?
Leave the final blank, enter its weight and your target grade, and the tool shows the score you need.
Do the weights have to add up to 100%?
For the target calculation, yes. Your current grade is worked out from the categories you’ve scored so far.
Can I use it for any grading system?
Yes, as long as scores are percentages and each category has a weight.
